Irvine Valley's women's beach volleyball team split matches in its opening day of the season on Friday at home.
The Lasers defeated Santa Barbara City, 5-0, and then lost a tough match to Long Beach City, 3-2.
Long Beach City also won its other two matches, taking down Santa Barbara, 3-2, and Fullerton, 5-0. Santa Barbara City topped Fullerton, 4-1, in the other match of the day.
Irvine Valley's teams of sophomore Taira Ka'awaloa and freshman Megan Ramseyer, playing at the No. 1 pairs position, and sophomore Olivia Aguilar and freshman Renata Bath, competing at No. 2, each won both of their matches on the day.
Irvine Valley started with the 5-0 win over Santa Barbara City.
The Lasers won four of the five pairs matches in straight sets.
Aguilar and Bath won, 21-18, 21-9.
IVC's top team of Ka'awaloa and Ramseyer rallied to win, 18-21, 21-17, 15-5.
Irvine Valley had its hands full with Long Beach City in its second match of the day.
Three of the matches went to three sets.
Ka'awaloa and Ramseyer won, 21-18, 18-21, 17-15, at the top spot.
And Aguilar and Bath won in straight sets, 21-19, 21-11.
But Long Beach City captured the matches at the third through fifth spots to take the overall victory.
IVC's No. 5 team of sophomore Diamond Brogan and freshman Alyssa Vortouni played well and took the first game, but fell in three sets, 12-21, 21-18, 15-10.
Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday, hosting NCAA Division 1 programs Long Beach State and Arizona. IVC will play Long Beach State at 2 p.m. and Arizona at 3 p.m.
