Irvine Valley's athlete of the week for Oct. 13 is sophomore women's volleyball player Alya Mersin.
The outside hitter had a standout week in two IVC wins, which moved the squad's record to 5-2 in the Orange Empire Conference.
She finished with seven kills, six aces and 15 digs in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 sweep of Santa Ana on Wednesday at home.
And then Mersin recorded 21 kills and finished with nine digs in IVC's five-set, 25-23, 23-25, 12-25, 28-26, 15-11 important win over Saddleback on Friday at home.
Mersin scored 22.0 points total in the win over Saddleback.
The former University High of Irvine standout is averaging 2.60 kills per set and 1.55 digs per set so far this season.
Mersin has been a star with indoor and on the beach courts for the Lasers over the last two years.
