Women's basketball team takes on Fullerton at home Friday

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team will try and start its Orange Empire Conference campaign with a second straight win on Friday night at home.

The Lasers host Fullerton at 6 p.m.

IVC has a record of 12-3 and is ranked No. 9 in the state and fourth in Southern California in this week's CCCWBCA polls.

The Lasers opened conference play on Wednesday night with an easy 91-47 win over Saddleback at home.

It was the team's third straight win.

Irvine Valley held a 19-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter and was ahead, 44-19, by half.

IVC led by as many as 47 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lasers shot an impressive 62.1 percent (18 of 29) as a team from the field in the first half and ended up shooting 58.3 percent (35 of 60) for the game.

IVC also out-rebounded Saddleback, 49-31, and finished with 24 assists on 35 made baskets.

Sophomore forward Kasey Smit paced IVC with 24 points (on 11 of 14 shooting), 10 rebounds, five assists and four blocks.

Sophomore forward Kiara Warren contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists, sophomore forward Jenna Rodriguez had 13 points and six rebounds and sophomore guard Elizabeth Garcia chipped in 11 points, four assists and two steals for Irvine Valley.

On the season, Smit averages 13.7 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 2.1 blocks per game to pace the Lasers.

Warren averages 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds, freshman guard Lexi Vail averages 10.2 points and 3.2 assists, Garcia is averaging 9.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists and freshman guard Cydnie Danan averages 7.2 points and 3.4 assists per game for Irvine Valley.

Fullerton has a record of 4-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Hornets dropped a tough 70-67 loss at Santa Ana in its conference opener on Wednesday night.

Fullerton out-scored Santa Ana, 38-29, in the second half, but it wasn't quite enough.

Aliyah-Deen Ahmad and Lyneya Turner each came off the bench with 14 points for the Hornets.

Turner also had 10 rebounds and three steals.

Kristen Sheriff contributed 13 points and Melody Thomson had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets in the loss.

On the year, Ahmad is averaging 14.4 points and 4.8 rebounds, Thomsen averages 13.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals and Sheriff is averaging 10.0 points and 4.8 points a game for Fullerton.
