Big first half leads women's basketball team to another easy W

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team rolled to its third straight Orange Empire Conference victory on Wednesday night.

The Lasers, ranked No. 14 in the state, out-scored Saddleback, 49-22, in the opening half and went on to a 79-54 win.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Saddleback's record fell to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in conference.

IVC now has wins by  48, 16 and 25 points in its first three conference contests.

Freshman guard Megan Herrera played well early to help give the Lasers the big lead and sophomore guard Lexi Vail finished strong to propel IVC.

Herrera scored 13 points and had four steals in the opening half. She finished with 17 points and five steals in the game.

Vail had a team-high 20 points to go along with six assists for the Lasers.

Freshman guard Emma Vasquez added 12 points and eight rebounds, Kelli Murakami-Hanashiro finished with eight points and three assists and freshman center Zoe Stachowski contributed 10 rebounds.

Irvine Valley shot 48.3 percent (29 of 60) as a team in the game, including 56.3 percent (18 of 32) in its big first half.

Irvine Valley also out-rebounded Saddleback, 47-35 in the contest.

Saddleback was paced by Joice Beda with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Raven Herrington added 13 points.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, traveling to Riverside for a 7 p.m. conference game.
