Alumni Report: Barett Nolan stars in beach at Colorado Mesa

Former Irvine Valley standout women's beach volleyball player Barett Nolan had a special senior season at NCAA Division II Colorado Mesa University this past spring.

Colorado Mesa had a record-setting season with a record of 21-11 overall.

The team's season ended at the hands of the University of Tampa, which went on to win its third straight AVCA Small College Beach Championship on Saturday here at Gulf Shores Public Beach.

It was still the most wins in program history for Colorado Mesa.

CMU went 3-2 throughout the three-day tournament and suffered losses only to the top two seeds and the two tournament finalists as they had a tough draw.

The Mavs were seeded fourth out of the 18 teams and advanced to the Gold Bracket in all six of their tournament appearances since 2019.

Their 21 wins were two more than the 2023's team total of 19.  And they had two different pairs that also ended up with 21 wins.

Nolan and sophomore Ania Swartzendruber finished 21-9 at No. 3.

The duo was leading their match over Tampa's Madleynn Hokanson and Hailey Peterson by a 21-19, 16-12 margin when the Spartans clinched the dual.

Nolan went 18-12 overall with partners Savannah Ott and Gracyn Spresser in her junior season in 2024.

Nolan began the year with Ott, going 6-3 in duals at No. 4 (4-2) and No. 5 (2-1).

She switched partners to Spresser and had a record of 12-9 throughout the rest of the season.

That pair was 10-6 in duals at No. 4 and 1-2 at No. 3.

She also had a 3-2 mark while being comfortably ahead in another unfinished match during the AVCA Small College Beach Championships.

Nolan was also recently named to the 2024-25 NCAA Division II Academic All-District® Men's & Women's At-Large teams, selected by the College Sports Communicators and announced by the organization.

To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams®, a student-athlete must have a 3.50 or higher GPA and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically amongst other athletic qualifications.

Nolan, a former Trabuco Hills High standout, played at IVC in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. She was named as an Orange Empire Conference MVP as a freshman in 2022 while helping the Lasers to a CCCAA state team championship.

She delivered the title-clinching victory alongside partner Jolie Rasmussen with a 16-14 third-set win in the championship match.

Nolan won the conference and regional championships, both as a team and as a pair that year and earned first team all-conference honors in both season.

Nolan helped the Lasers win another conference team championship as a sophomore in 2023 and was a member of the conference championship runner-up pair… Was a regional top 5 finisher as a pair as well…. Was in the top 16 as a pair at the state tournament in both seasons… Was on the dean's list for four consecutive terms.
