Women's volleyball team plays tough, but falls in three to OCC

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team held leads late in each of the first two sets before falling to Orange Coast, 25-17, 25-23, 25-7, Friday night at home in an Orange Empire Conference match. 

Irvine Valley's record went to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Lasers led, 12-9, in the first set and were tied at 14 before the Pirates scored 11 of the next 14 points and ended the set on a block by Joey Payan.

IVC led even later into the second set, taking a 17-13 lead on a kill by freshman setter Dalilah Rivero

And the Lasers were up, 20-17, after a serve in the net by OCC.

Irvine Valley took a 22-20 advantage on a hitting error by the Pirates.

But Orange Coast scored five points in a row to take the set and finished things with a tip winner by Nika Safavi.

The third set was all OCC with the Pirates jumping out to a 19-2 lead before winning, 25-7.

For Irvine Valley, freshman outside hitter Emma Mendel led the way with 12 kills and seven digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Alya Mersin, Rivero and freshman middle blocker Jazlynn Fu each added four kills and freshman setter Tori Esko had 11 assists.

Irvine Valley plays at Golden West on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then hosts Cypress on Friday at 6 p.m.
