A team leader and onf of the captains for one of the best California Community College programs in the state, Irvine Valley men's tennis starter and state champion Nevin McCann has committed to NCAA Division II Linfield University in McMinnville, Ore.
McCann, out of Sunny Hills High in Fullerton, helped IVC to a record of 27-3 over the past two seasons, including a 14-1 record this past year - and two straight Orange Empire Conference and 3C2A State team titles.
He started in singles and doubles for the team both seasons and always battled, cheered on his teammates and led the fired up cheers at the start of the important matches, especially in the playoffs.
McCann and freshman teammate Humam Alajeely sprinted out of the gates at No. 2 doubles, breaking three times en route to a 6-0 lead and won, 8-2, to get the Lasers off to an early start in the team state over Foothill at Ventura College.
It was the first point of the day for the Lasers, who went on to defeat Foothill, 5-0, for the fifth title in program history under coach Ross Duncan.
McCann turned around and also won the 3C2A state doubles title with fellow sophomore Bradley Yung.
In men's doubles, Irvine Valley's Yung and McCann delivered an impressive performance in their 6-4, 6-4 win over Ventura College's Caua Coimbra and Abladj Mondroha at Libbey Park in Ojai.
McCann and Yung finished the year ranked No. 1 in the 3C2A in doubles and helped carry the Lasers to another overall Ojai Cup for the 3C2A with team, singles title (teammate Philip Neuman) and doubles crown.
McCann is headed to a Linfield University program that competes in the Northwest Conference.
