Irvine Valley's men's basketball team won its fifth game in its last six contests and opened the Orange Empire Conference schedule with a tight, 59-57 win over Cypress on Wednesday night at home.

The Lasers improved their record to 11-4 overall.

IVC next plays at district rival Saddleback on Friday at 5 p.m.

Wednesday's game was close throughout. IVC led, 24-22, after the first half and then held that advantage over the final 20 minutes.

Irvine Valley was led by freshman wing Ahmad Alhammouri with 13 points, six rebounds, one steal and one block and sophomore guard Yanis Aldeguer also with 13 points.

Aldeguer also added three assists.

Freshman point guard Santos Cordero contributed nine points, two rebounds and two assists for the Lasers in the win.
