Men's basketball team loses at the end at rival Cypress

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team has some work to do now in the Orange Empire Conference after droppings its third game in a row - this one in a tough one, 78-76, late at Cypress on Friday night.

IVC's record went to 13-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Cypress won its second in a row and moved to 12-10 overall and 5-3 in conference.

The Lasers and Chargers are now tied for fifth place in the OEC.

Friday's game featured momentum swings, efficient shooting, and aggressive play on both ends of the floor. 

The Lasers came out sharp offensively in the opening half, but Cypress stayed within striking distance despite early shooting struggles, relying on free throws and strong interior play to keep the contest close.

The Chargers turned the tide in the second half with a dominant offensive performance, shooting 61.5 percent from the floor after the break.

Irvine Valley shot 50 percent (24 of 48) from the floor as a team in the game, but committed nine turnovers that Cypress turned into 18 points.

IVC was led by freshman guard Ahmad Alhammouri, who finished with a career-high 28 points. He 9 of 15 from the field, including making 5 of 9 three points.

Alhammouri also knocked down 5 of 6 free throws. It was his sixth double-digit scoring game in a row.

Freshman guard Santos Cordero ended with 14 points and sophomore post player Matt Mowers totaled 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

The Chargers, who finished with a 24–14 advantage on points in the paint, were paced by Jack Rivera with 19 points. He made five three-pointers.

Jack Rivera led the team with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Rivera ended the night with 5 three pointers.

Michael Wright contributed 17 points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Chargers.

Irvine Valley hosts Saddleback next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
