The Irvine Valley baseball team received masterful pitching from sophomore starter Jackson Chastain and sophomore reliever Andres Hernandez in a 6-0 win in the 2026 opener at Long Beach City on Friday afternoon.
Chastain earned the win, throwing five scoreless innings and giving up just four hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
Hernandez then gave up just one hit and had two strikeouts in shutting out the Vikings the rest of the way for the win.
Neither team scored through the first three innings.
IVC got on the board in the top of the fourth with a run and then added two more in the top of the sixth for a 3-0 lead.
Irvine Valley put the game away in the top of the eighth with three more runs.
The Lasers had 11 hits on the day.
Sophomore designated hitter Jake Admundson hit a home run, went 2 for 5 with two runs and one RBI and freshman shortstop Mason Gerhardt went 3 for 5 with a run scored and one RBI to lead the way for IVC.
Freshman catcher Shane Flynn had two hits, one RBI and stole a base and freshman second baseman Adrian Covarrubias contributed two hits and a stolen base.
Sophomore center fielder also reached base four times with a hit and three walks and scored a run.
Irvine Valley plays Long Beach City again on Saturday at home at noon to finish the series.
