Irvine Valley baseball team loses lead late to LA Mission

Irvine Valley went after its second straight win over LA Mission on Saturday afternoon at home.

The Lasers were in position to do so late in the contest, but Mission scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a 8-6 victory.

The defeat dropped Irvine Valley's record to 13-4 overall.

Irvine Valley now opens Orange Empire Conference play next Tuesday at Cypress at 2 p.m.

IVC led, 3-2, after the second inning, but LA Mission put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good.

After Mission's four spt in the seventh, IVC answered with three runs in the botom of the frame on RBI hits by freshman catcher Shane Flynn, freshman designated hitter Mason Gerhardt and freshman second baseman Adrian Covarrubias to pull within 8-6.

But that was as close the Lasers would get.

On the afternoon, Irvine Valley out-hit Mission, 12-9.

Sophomore shortstop Jake Amundson, Flynn, Gerhardt and freshman left fielder Kaden Aimer each had two hits for the Lasers. 

Irvine Valley right-handed reliever Nathan Gentz suffered the loss on the mound, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits, one walk and one hit batter. His record went to 1-2 on the year.
