The Irvine Valley baseball team, newly ranked as the No. 12 team in the state, goes on the road and in one of its closest games of the season so far, defeats San Diego Mesa, 3-2, on Friday to stay undefeated and improve its record to 10-0 overall.
It took extra innings for IVC on Friday to get it done.
The Lasers pushed across a run in the top of the 11th inning and then held closed things down in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomore third baseman Lucas Scott scored from third in the 11th on a fielder's choice by freshman shortstop Mason Gerhardt.
IVC scored a run in the top of the first and top of the third, but then was in a fight the rest of the way with the Olympians.
Sophomore designated hitter Jake Amundson hit a run-scoring double in the top of the first and then freshman second baseman Adrian Covarrubias hit a solo home run for Irvine Valley in the top of the third.
Covarrubias ended up going 2 for 4 with a run scored and the home run for the Lasers.
Freshman first baseman Jacob Ceja Amundson and freshman left fielder Aiden Kaimer also had two hits apiece for Irvine Valley.
IVC freshman left-handed pitcher Luke Acuna went 4.2 strong innings, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Sophomore righty Andres Hernandez followed with 4.1 innings and gave up one unearned run. Hernandez gave up one hit and struck out six.
Taking the win for the Lasers on the mound was freshman right-hander Cooper Payne. He threw two scoreless innings without giving up a hit and struck out two batters.
The Lasers host the Olympians on Saturday at noon.
