Irvine Valley's baseball team found itself in a hole, down, 5-2, after four innings in the Orange Empire Conference opener at Cypress on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lasers scored a run in the sixth and one more in the ninth, but the Chargers held on for a 5-4 win.
Irvine Valley's record went to 13-4 overall and 0-1 in conference and Cypress improved to 12-4 overall and 1-0 in the OEC.
Cypress scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Justin Tillar provided the biggest swing of the day for the Chargers, launching a two-run home run to spark the rally.
Ty Peters then had a two-run double and Braden Ruiz also drove in a run to round out the Cypress scoring.
Irvine Valley, which out-hit Cypress, 9-6, on the day, took a 1-0 lead in top of the first inning on a passed ball.
And the Lasers went ahead, 2-0, in the top of the fourth on a RBI double by freshman center fielder Brandon Abernathy.
Down, 5-2, in the sixth inning, freshman left fielder Kaden Aimer hit a solo home run.
And in the ninth, sophomore right fielder Sam Tucci scored on a passed ball to make it a one-run gam.
But it wasn't enough.
Freshman first baseman Jacob Ceja went 3 for 5 with a run scored and Aimer also had two hits for the Lasers.
Freshman right-hander Cooper Hahn took the loss for IVC. He went 3.1 innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk with one strikeout.
The two teams play again on Thursday at Irvine Valley at 2 p.m.
