After taking OEC title, basketball earns all-conference honors

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team had several players earn all-Orange Empire Conference honors after winning the OEC title with a record of 10-2 overall.

The Lasers also finished with a 24-4 mark and just this past weekend earned the No. 2 seed in the 3C2A SoCal Regional Playoffs.

After receiving a first-round bye, they will play again on Saturday at home at 7 p.m. in the second round against an opponent to be determined.

As far as the OEC honors went, sophomore guard Symantha Barnett was named the OEC Most Valuable Player and first team all-conference.

Barnett served as the engine of the Lasers offense establishing herself as a true floor general.

She averaged 13.7 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while guiding Irvine Valley with a strong conference campaign.

Sophomore wing Alexis Price was also named first team all-conference for the second year in a row after averaging 14.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Sophomore forward Kivonni Williams was another star for the Lasers and earned defensive player of the year honors and first team all-OEC accolades.

She averaged 10.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals, while defending opponent's best front court and wing players for much of the season.

The fourth honor went to sophomore forward Gianna DeForest, who was named second team all-conference after playing in 26 games and averaging 5.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game.

IVC second-year head coach Claire Gocke was also named coach of the year in the conference after leading the Lasers to the 24-win season.

A story on Gocke will be posted on Wednesday.
