Women's basketball starts year with upset win at Palomar

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team goes on the road and picks up a major early season win on Saturday, taking down No. 6 in the state Palomar, 65-56, in overtime.

The Lasers were ranked No. 25 in the state to start the year.

Irvine Valley, under second-year head coach Claire Gocke, was led by sophomore forward Symantha Barnett, who finished with 17 points.

Sophomore wing Kivonni Williams added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Lasers in the win.

IVC sophomore forward Neryah Lokeni was also solid with nine points and 10 rebounds. And sophomore forward Alexis Price contributed eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals.

Irvine Valley made 18 of 21 free throws in the game and closed out the contest in overtime by out-scoring the Comets, 12-3.

In the extra period, Barnett scored 10 of the team's 12 points.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday at the Cougars Invitational at LA Southwest at 3 p.m. against Southwestern.
